What We Catch

Flats & Backcountry Species

General information on the types of gamefish encountered on any give day fly fishing the flats and backcountry.

Bonefish

Anglers often refer to bonefish as “the Gray Ghosts of the Flats,” due to their swift speeds, their smoky silver color, and their ability to seemingly slip right past an angler in stealthy fashion.

Tarpon

Considered one of the great saltwater game fishes. They are prized not only because of their great size, but also because of the fight they put up and their spectacular leaping ability.

Permit

Known as the trophy of the flats, Permit are pound for pound one of the strongest fish in the world. Notoriously difficult to catch on fly.

Snook

A staple of backcountry fishing and can be found all year. Sight fishing for snook on the flats either using a fly rod or artificial lures is best when water temperatures are between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Speckled Trout

Seatrout found inshore and nearshore in and around seagrass meadows, mangrove-fringed shorelines, deep holes and channels and above oyster bars. Spotted seatrout make excellent table fare.

Redfish

Redfish will readily strike bait, lures and flies. Their habit of tailing in shallow water and the schooling of bull reds at times in open water off beaches make them a favorite target of sight-casters. Reds hit hard and run strong, particularly in skinny water.
